Information Regarding Libertarian and Green Party Voter Registrations
Des Moines – The Iowa Secretary of State's office has fixed a coding error in the state's voter registration system which inadvertently led to "Libertarian" and "Green" voter registrations completed at the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) or county treasurers' locations to be marked as "No Party." After review, this error dates back to 2007 when "Libertarian" and "Green" options were added on Iowa's voter registration forms.
The issue has not affected any Iowan's right to vote or ability to register to vote. It only affected Iowans who registered at the DOT or county treasurers' office as "Libertarian" or "Green" between 2007 and 2014. The coding error may have caused voters to receive a voter registration card listing "No Party" rather than "Libertarian" or "Green."
"This coding error has been fixed and no Iowan's ability to vote or register to vote was affected. When we discovered this issue with our voter registration system, we worked with the DOT to confirm which Iowans were affected from 2007 to now. We'll be sending potentially affected Iowans a postcard providing their current party affiliation and contact information should they need further assistance," Elections Director Sarah Reisetter said. "We encourage every eligible Iowan to register to vote and we want their information to be 100% accurate."
Any Iowans with questions or concerns about this postcard or their voter registration record should contact the elections division of the Iowa Secretary of State's office at 1-888-SOS-VOTE.
