Secretary Schultz Showcases Iowa
Election App at NASS Conference
Washington, DC—Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz highlighted the State of Iowa’s use of mobile technology during the 2012 general election cycle at the National Association of Secretaries of State meeting in Washington, DC.
As one of the first states in the country to launch a mobile application for voters in the recent election, Secretary Schultz was asked to present on the “Iowa SOS” app at the Voter Participation Committee meeting on Friday, January 25.
Secretary Schultz is also the Co-Chair of the Voter Participation Committee, along with Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill.
Schultz pointed out that Iowa’s mobile app was available for iPhone, iPad, and Android operating systems, and included a wide-ranging number of functions. Voters were able to download the application free of charge, and were able to choose from the following menu of options:
- Find my polling place
- Am I registered to vote?
- Request an absentee ballot
- Track my absentee ballot
- Election calendar
- Report voter fraud
- Contact your County Auditor
- Contact the SOS Office
Secretary Schultz commented, “Iowa has a long and proud tradition of taking steps to make voting easier and more accessible for its citizens. The use of mobile technology was a logical ‘next step’ in that tradition. Voters were able to find out if they were registered to vote, find their polling places—including a mapping function, request an absentee ballot and track that ballot to make sure the auditor received it, along with several other tools to make sure they were prepared on Election Day. I am proud that Iowa was one of the first states to offer such an app, and that we were able to lead the way in providing such a broad array of functions at the same time.”
The national meeting of Secretaries of State is taking place in Washington, DC, from Thursday, January 24 through Sunday, January 27.
