MEDIA RELEASE: Statewide consistency and training of poll workers are critical to Iowa election integrity
DES MOINES – Today, Governor Kim Reynolds signed HF 2466 into law. Under this new law, the Iowa Secretary of State’s office will dedicate new resources to the training of Iowa’s poll workers, implementing a statewide training program. Poll workers play a critical role in ensuring Iowa’s elections are run safely and smoothly – they check in voters, handle ballots, assist voters, answer questions, serve as a trusted face when voters come to the polls on Election Day.
“Iowans have made it clear that election integrity is a top priority, and Governor Reynolds and the Iowa Legislature have answered the call with this bill,” said Secretary Pate. “A key component to election integrity is consistency and uniformity across every Iowa county. Now, poll workers and election officials in all 99 counties will receive uniform, thorough training, ensuring that voters in all four corners of the state have a positive and consistent experience when they vote.”
Each election, thousands of poll workers are needed across more than 1,600 precincts.
“Becoming a poll worker is a great way to get a firsthand look at the work that goes into providing fair and accurate elections,” said Secretary Pate. “I encourage anyone who has interest in the election process to sign up as a poll worker. Poll workers are your neighbors and friends, and Iowans can rest assured that their voices are heard when they see a trusted face working the polls on Election Day.
