Secretary of State Paul Pate officially accepts Governor Branstad’s resignation; notifies Lt. Governor Reynolds of vacancy


DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate officially accepted the resignation of Iowa Governor Terry Branstad Wednesday morning. Branstad submitted his resignation to Secretary Pate at 10:14 a.m. Pate then notified Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds of the vacancy. The proceedings were part of the official transfer of power, in accordance with Iowa Code 69.4 and 69.7.

"It has been a great honor to serve with Governor Branstad for many years. He is one of the most dedicated public servants in U.S. history and one of the most hard-working individuals I have ever known," Secretary Pate said. "I am humbled to accept his resignation and pleased to officially notify Kim Reynolds of the vacancy and her subsequent ascendancy to the position of Governor and all the powers of the chief executive of the State of Iowa. I am confident she will be a strong leader for the state of Iowa."
