"You are a light. You are the light. Never let anyone – any person or any force – dampen, dim or diminish your light. Study the path of others to make your way easier and more abundant.

The John Lewis Youth Leadership Award, established following Congressman John Lewis' passing, honors young individuals for their outstanding contributions to their communities. Each year, Secretaries of State from across the US can recognize up to two recipients who exemplify leadership and activism, inspired by Lewis' lifelong commitment to voting rights and youth engagement in democracy. This award not only celebrates individual achievements but also serves as a beacon, inspiring other young people to engage actively and make meaningful impacts in their communities, reinforcing the belief that everyone has the power to shape the future of our nation.

Nominations should demonstrate the following

  • The recipient must be a resident of Iowa and 25 years or younger at the time of the award presentation.
  • The recipient is recognized in their community for being civic-minded and improving the quality of life in their community.
  • The recipient has shown a meaningful commitment to address civil rights issues, including but not limited to voting rights, and to authentically bring about positive change in his or her community. Examples could include youth leadership in a specific project or program, advocacy, or even literature as the Congressman also won a National Book Award for young people’s literature.
