Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate's statement on the verdict in the Griffin vs. Pate case

"I appreciate the District Court's recognition of the long-held precedent that prohibits citizens convicted of felonies from voting in Iowa's elections, unless their rights have been restored by the Governor. I also concur with the court's decision to uphold the 99-year interpretation of the Iowa Constitution to include all felonies in the definition of ‘infamous crimes'. Judge Gamble wrote in his decision that the state's interest in the integrity of our elections is of the highest importance and worthy of protection. I agree. When I took the Oath of Office in January, I swore to support the Constitution and the integrity of Iowa's elections. That includes efforts to insure elections are not diluted by ineligible voters." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State
